Belarusian athletes at the European Youth Olympic Festival

For the first time young athletes from Belarus (both male and female) took part in the European Youth Olympic Festival in 1993. That year they managed to win 5 medals (2 silver ones and 3 bronze ones) in the Summer European Youth Olympic Days (that was the official name of the competition at that time). In two years in 1995 the result was even better: 8 medals (2 gold, 1 silver and 5 bronze). In 1997 the national team won 2 gold and 2 silver medals. So 4 medals all in all.

In 1999 once again they won 4 medals, but that time there weren’t any gold ones, just two silver and two bronze.

In 2001 at the Winter Festival in Finland our young athletes competed in three programs: biathlon, skiing and skating. They brought home three medals (0-1-2).

In 2001 in a Spanish city of Murcia Belarusian athletes won 3 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals in 5 sports: athletics (1-1-2), swimming (1-0-1), sailing (1-0-0), basketball (silver-women) and judo (bronze).

All in all 19 athletes won the medals in Spain. According to the unofficial team rating Belarus takes the 12th place among 46 countries. As far as the CIS countries are concerned only Russia and the Ukraine managed to overcome us.

In 2003 in Paris at the VII Summer European Youth Olympic Festival the athletes from Belarus won 8 medals (1-0-7), including the gold medal in pole vault exercises.

In winter of 2005 in Switzerland the national team of the country participated in three sport programs: biathlon, short-track and cross country and won one bronze medal.

From 2 to 9 July, 2005 in an Italian city of Lignano the Belarusian team won 11 medals (4-5-2)  and got the eighth place in the medal rating among 48 teams of Europe. This is the best result in the history of our country at the festival.

In 2007 in a Spanish city of Jaca at the VII EYOWF the Belarusian national team won 2 gold medals (both the medals were grabbed by the biathlete Vladimir Alenishko) and got the fifth place in the team rating among 48 countries. In fact, the athletes from just 15 countries managed to win the medals.

At the IX EYOSF in Belgrade in 2007 young Belarusian athletes won only 3 medals (0-1-2). According to the unofficial rating of the countries Belarus got the 30th place.

At the EYOF in Tampere (Finland) Belarusian athletes won 4 medals (1-2-1) and were placed 23rd in the team rating.
