Belarus, Latvia will strengthen relations as they co-host IIHF WC

This was announced today by Prime Minister Sergei Rumas at the NOC Belarus at a joint meeting of the Belarusian and Latvian organizing committees to prepare for the 2021 World Hockey Championship.

Sergei Rumas said: “I’m sure that the joint holding of the World Hockey Championship will further strengthen our good neighborly relations. Both Latvia and Belarus have already accumulated quite a lot of experience in successfully conducting international competitions. Latvia hosted the world hockey championship in 2006, Belarus in 2014. According to the estimates of the International Hockey Federation and the fans, these were very successful championships.”

He takes note of that Belarus is taking the World Cup 2021 very seriously, this issue is under the constant control of the head of state. Sergei Rumas recalled that a decree had recently been signed that governs the championship, establishes a visa-free regime for fans, and also regulates other organizational issues.

The head of state suggested compare notes at the meeting today - to consider organizational issues and focus on joint decisions that need to be taken in the near future.

Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins, in turn, noted that hockey is an important sport for Belarus and Latvia. He added: “We are really very happy that we will hold this championship together. As for the practical issues related to the border, transport, we are going to do everything we can.”
