The sport year 2010 has been especially successful for our country as at the XXI Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver (Canada) our freestyle skier Alexey Grishin was the first Belarusian athlete to win a gold medal. Apart from him our biathletes Sergei Novikov and Daria Domracheva made us triumph, having won a silver medal and a bronze one (accordingly) in Vancouver.
Fortunately for us, Belarusian athletes managed to make us take pride in them at other prestigious sport events. Over a period of the year 2010 at the Olympic Games, World and Europe Championships, Cups etc. they managed to grab 514 medals (149 gold medals, 144 silver ones and 191 bronze ones). By the way, the year 2009 was a bit more fruitful in this regard: there were 527 medals all in all (167-166-194).
This year Belarusian athletes have been prominent in the most prestigious Olympic sports like never before: they have ascended the victory podium for 220 times: (60-76-84). Last year the figure was equal to 208 (66-65-77).
At the summer World championships our athletes have won 14 medals in Olympic disciplines (1-6-7). This is the 12th best rating result worldwide.
Sergei Martynov in 2010 has become the World champion in the Olympic discipline—sport shooting. The holders of silver medals are Ekaterina Karsten (academic rowing), Timophei Deinichenko (Greco-roman wrestling), Aleksandr Bogdanovich/Andrei Bogdanovich (canoe kayak), Anastasia Novikova (weightlifting), Roman Petrushenko/Vadim Makhnev/ Aleksei Abalmasov/ Artur Litvinchuk (canoe kayak), national rhythmic gymnastics team in group exercises.
Oleg Yurenia (canoe kayak), Viktorya Chaika (sport shooting), Sergei Lagun (weightlifting), Melitina Staniuta (rhythmic gymnastics), Olga Panarina (track cycling), Dmitri Kasperovich (artistic gymnastics), Ruslan Sheihov (freestyle wrestling) have come back from the World championships with bronze medals.
From Europe Championships in Olympic disciplines Belarusian athletes have brought 31 medals (9-8-14).
The titles of Europe champions have been gained by Anastasia Novikova, Vitali Derbenev (both-weightlifting), Aleksandr Kikinev (Greco-roman wrestling), Igor Makarov (judo), Nadezhda Ostapchuk, Adnrei Mikhnevich (both—athletics), Ekaterina Karsten (academic rowing), Olga Panarina (track cycling), Viktorya Pavlovich (table tennis).
Timofei Deinichenko (Greco-roman wresting), Aleksandr Steshenko (judo), Viktor Zuev (boxing), Oleg Yurenia (canoe kayak), Natalya Mikhnevich (athletics), Aleksandra Gherasimenia (swimming), Tatsiana Sharakova (track cycling), men’s team in table tennis have become silver medal winners at the continental sport events.
The bronze medals of the Continental championships have been awarded to Nikolai Novikov, Valentina Liahovets, Olga Kniazhische (all-weightlifting), Aleksei Dubko, Aleksei Shemarov (both-freestyle wrestling), Vaicheslav Model (trampoline), Sergei Kunitsyn, Magomed Nurudinov, Nikolai Veselov (all—boxing), Andrei Kravchenko (athletics), Vadim Kaptur/Timofei Gordeichik (water jumping), national rhythmic gymnastics team in group exercises, women’s table tennis team.
As far as the coaches are concerned, the best results have been achieved by the following ones: Nikolai Kozeko (freestyle skiing), Vladimir Shantarovich, Nikolai Banko (both-canoe kayak), Anatoli Buialski (basketball), Viktor Goncharenko and Georgi Kondratiev (football), Irina Leparskaya (rhythmic gymnastics), Aleksandr Efimov (athletics), Aleksandr Popov, Andrian Tsybulski (biathlon).
In the team’s rating the following Belarusian teams have turned out to be the best: women’s basketball team, youth football team, football club BATE, national teams in freestyle skiing, biathlon, canoe kayak, rhythmic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics in group exercises.

As far as competitive sports are concerned, the best team of the country according to sport journalists is women’s basketball team. The best coach of the country in their opinion is the main coach of the women’s national basketball team Anatoli Buialski.
