The decision to hold an ‘Olympic Day’ was taken in January 1948 at the 42nd Session of the IOC in St Moritz, Switzerland. The main events take place on 23 June, the day of the IOC's creation. National Olympic Committees independently choose the date of the sports holiday in their country.

In Belarus, this mass sports event has been held annually for many years with the aim of engaging the public in sports and active lifestyle, as well as solving one of the most important tasks of the sports industry - recruitment and staffing of initial training groups of sports institutions with promising and talented children.
