Belarusian Victoria Azarenka won the Premiere Tennis tournament in Doha, Qatar, (Prize fund - $2.369 mln) for the second time in a row, BELTA informs.
Today the best Belarusian tennis player has beaten an American Serena Williams in singles’ tournament final match – 7:6 (8:6), 2:6, 6:3. The match lasted for 2 hours 28 minutes. Last year Victoria Azarenka won the Qatar Open for the first time having beaten an Australian Samantha Stosur – 6:1, 6:2. This year Victoria won the Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open in Melbourne, also for the second time, having beaten Chinese Na Li – 4:6, 6:4, 6:3. During her professional career which started in 2005 Victoria Azarenka won 16 WTA Tournaments. Victoria Azarenka got a $426 000 certificate as a reward for winning the tournament in Doha, and Serena Williams got a $213 000 certificate.
Despite winning the final match Victoria Azarenka handed the 1st place of the world rankings to Serena Williams, who shall officially take the lead starting from February 18. American tennis player will retrieve her leadership in the WTA rankings after the break which lasted for two years and will become the oldest world № 1 in tennis in the history.
