The snow park in Genting, the venue of the freestyle skiing competition, attracted the attention of many fans and media accredited at the Winter Games on 10 February.
It was not without a reason that many Belarusian fans were looking forward to the successful performance of Belarusian athletes, who since Nagano 1998 won medals in aerials at every Olympics. Mixed Team Aerials made its Olympic debut in Beijing. For Team Belarus it did not go so well: the 6th place (273.67 points). The gold medal went to U.S. Ashley Caldwell, Justin Schoenefeld, and Christopher Lillis who performed an excellent jump that allowed the United States to get ahead of China who placed second.
Following the event Maksim Hustik noted: "I did not perform as I wanted. Actually I did badly. I made a mistake when performing the third somersault and had a touch of hands when landing. The score has been reduced accordingly. Competition is very strong here. If we had done well in the jumps, we could have competed for medals.”
Stanislav Gladchenko noted that the men’s team could not really handle their emotions during the performance.
Figure skater Konstantin Milyukov placed 20th in the overall ranking. “Konstantin’s performance in the short program and free skating was very good. Perhaps it was his best performance of the season. He did a great job. He pulled himself together and performed at the top of his ability at the Olympic Games. I think this is a very notable achievement for Belarusian figure skating. Our figure skaters had not performed at the Olympic Games for a long time. Viktoriia Safonova will soon take to the ice for the women’s single skating event. I would like to note that Beijing has very good living conditions. Athletes and other Games participants feel very comfortable here in the Olympic Village. We should always think of the Olympics as a great celebration of sports. I hope that all of us will cherish good memories of Beijing 2022 despite all the difficulties we are going through,” said head coach Oleg Vasiliev.
Belarusian speed skater Maryna Zuyeva placed 9th in the Women’s 5,000m, clocking 7:02.91. Four years ago she clocked 7:04.41 in the discipline. Two-time Olympic champion Irene Schouten of the Netherlands set a new Olympic record of 6:43.51. Earlier, she became the 3,000m champion in Beijing.
Flag bearers Ignat Golovatsiuk and Hanna Nifantava, as well as Ekaterina Sloeva and Yauheniya Varabyova will perform in speed skating later.
