Day 12 of the Winter Olympics in Beijing brought a lot of news for Belarusian sports fans.
The Belarusian biathlon team of Iryna Leshchanka, Dzinara Alimbekava, Elena Kruchinkina and Hanna Sola missed out on the Women’s 4x6km Relay podium, finishing 13th. After the finish, the coaches started analyzing the competition. Iryna Leshchanka did the best out of all four Belarusian athletes in the relay.
“It is very frustrating. So much work was done ahead of these competitions, and nothing is working out here. We are really upset. We still have the Women’s Mass Start ahead, and we still have a chance. We will try our best. I hope the luck will be on our side. So far, the Olympics in China have been full of anti-records for us. We did not come here for such results. The day before we were talking with the girls and agreed that time flies very quickly: training sessions, time to rest. Today on the bus, I realized that it was getting hard to breathe, everything was pressing. I will do my best to recover,” said Hanna Sola.
The biathlon tournament at the Beijing Olympics will wrap up with the Mass Start events. The Men’s Mass Start is scheduled for 18 February (Anton Smolski will represent Belarus). The Women’s Mass Start is due on 19 February (Dzinara Alimbekava and Hanna Sola will compete for Belarus).
Belarusian skiers Yahor Shpuntau and Aliaksandr Voranau competed in the team sprint classic.
They clocked 20 minutes 34.074 seconds.
Their performance in the semi-final kept their medal hopes alive. However, 11 teams outperformed our duet in the second semi-final race.
As a result, Yahor Shpuntau and Aliaksandr Voranau were out of the final placing 12th.
Stanislau Hladchanka failed to qualify for the superfinal in the men’s aerials and placed 11th with 116.29 points.
Gold went to Qi Guangpu of China who earned 129 points. He beat defending champion Oleksandr Abramenko of Ukraine who scored 116.5 points. Ilia Burov of the Russian team took home bronze with 114.93 points.
“There is no limit to perfection. Such a score means that I should have performed better. In general, I am satisfied with my jumps today. I fulfilled my tasks. It's hard for me to comment on the score. Of course, I will watch all the jumps on the tablet in a video replay. Maybe I really made a mistake somewhere. I competed against a world-class field, this is Olympics after all,” Stanislau Hladchanka said.
