Negotiations between Viktor Lukashenko and Kirsty Coventry took place in the format of a video conference.
This was the first time the president of the NOC of Belarus and the president of the IOC have held a personal conversation via video link.
The head of the NOC of Belarus noted that the Belarusian sport is going through one of the most difficult periods in its history:
“The restrictions have affected not only top-level athletes but also young athletes who are just beginning their journey in elite sports.”
He underscored the need to keep politics out of sports, voicing hope that with the IOC president's support, Belarusian athletes would be able to return to full participation in international events in the near future.
IOC President Kirsty Coventry stated:
“We had a good conversation with the president of Belarus’ NOC and his team. The IOC is committed to supporting Belarusian athletes.”
The head of the NOC thanked the IOC for its support through Olympic Solidarity and noted the organization’s consistent work in this area.
The parties noted the constructive and stable nature of the dialogue, expressing their intention to continue regular negotiations and jointly find solutions to all current issues.
